Module summary
This module introduces the theoretical approaches to the study of and historical experience of terrorism.Objectives
On completion, students should be able to:a) Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the concepts of terrorism, the typology of terrorism, the origins and strategies of terrorists, state sponsorship of terrorism, terrorism and weapons of mass destruction and the formation of public policy to counter-terrorism and provide security.
b) Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the history of terrorism and insurgency in the 20th century and beyond.
c) Be able to appraise competing theories and interpretations of the concept, the origins and dynamics of terrorism, and likewise of insurgency and counter-insurgency.
d) Demonstrate a critical understanding of a range of theoretical and empirical literature on terrorism and security.
e) Use their analytical skills to undertake independent research on topics in this area.
Learning outcomes
Students should acquire an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the history of terrorism since World War II, of modern insurgency and other sub-state conflicts.

- assessing, analysing and criticising information;
- appraising relevant concepts and theories; presenting and communicating effectively the product of independent research.
Syllabus
Theoretical Approaches, Terrorism and the Cold War, Terrorism in Western Europe, Northern Ireland, Terrorism in developing countries, The Middle East, New forms of terrorism and counter-terrorism, Al-Quaeda and the 'war against terror'.
