Module summary

This module is offered for all students studying for a Masters programme in the School of Politics and International Studies. It is designed to serve as an introduction to the Masters programmes and to provide guidance for your dissertation. Your dissertation is an independent research project. Whilst you will be supervised, you will take responsibility for the focus, design, and delivery of the project.

Objectives

The module is designed with five goals: (1) To understanding what to expect from a Masters at Leeds; (2) To learning how to think, read, and write critically; (3) To learn how to write a dissertation; (4) To understanding research design; (5) To introduce students to several qualitative methods.

By the end of the module, students should be well equipped to read and think critically, to avoid plagiarism, to understand what is expected of them when writing a dissertation, and to understand the importance of research design.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Identify, explain and discuss key concepts and debates in the field of their chosen research.
2. Use the methods/concepts of their degree program to interrogate a specific research area
3. Question the assumptions of their chosen research area and generate new questions and knowledge.
4. Critically reflect on the key arguments offered by scholars and policy makers in their chosen research area

Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Communicate ideas accurately, effectively, and persuasively in writing in line with academic best practice.
2. Identify and analyse relevant information in order to develop and defend informed arguments.
3. Plan and develop an independent piece of written research.
4. Gather and interrogate information, theoretical approaches and methods to identify whether it is accurate and relevant.
