Satisfactory completion of an appropriate BA programme at level one.

Objectives

This module gives students the opportunity to:

- demonstrate their ability to cope with a significant change in their environment and adapt to a new culture;
- broaden their understanding and knowledge of their subject specialisms;
- gain a deeper understanding of the country in which they are studying;
- improve their foreign language skills (in exchanges where the language is not English); and,
- develop transferable skills in openness and sensitivity to diversity in terms of people and culture.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- appreciate the differences in political, societal and economic relationships in a wider context;
- understand a range of current issues in Development Studies and/or International Relations and Politics
- reflect on their acquisition of skills relevant to their degree;
- set personal objectives and pursue them;
- develop transferable skills in openness and sensitivity to diversity in terms of people and culture; and,
- enhance personal and professional resilience.

Syllabus

Candidates will spend a year abroad as part of their programme. The study will be arranged with the host institution and it will normally involve taught courses in appropriate subjects that do not duplicate those taken in Leeds.

This programme allows students to spend their third year of their degree programme at a designated University abroad. Courses will be approved by the School's Study Abroad Coordinator for the programme and a Learning Contract will be drawn up covering academic requirements.

NOTE
- Teaching and Private Study will vary according to the receiving institution but will total 1200 hours;
- Transcript of marks is provided but they do not count towards the final degree classification;
- Study Abroad year is assessed on a pass/fail basis. The Learning Contract for study abroad states that equivalant 100 University of Leeds credits must be passed but these do not count towards the final degree classification.

Methods of assessment will vary according to regulations of host institution - transcripts from host institution will be provided.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Candidates will be expected to sign and abide by a Learning Contract whilst on their year abroad. Accepting a place on a study abroad year binds Students to this. Candidates can see the latest version of the Learning Contract before formally accepting the place on a study abroad year. Please get in touch with either the study abroad officer or assistant to be sent the latest version of the Learning Contract.

The terms of the Learning Contract will also be explained to you at the Study Abroad meeting prior to application for the year abroad and again at the pre-departure meeting in semester two of your second year'

The Study Abroad Coordinator is in contact with outgoing students periodically during their year abroad to monitor progress and check programme of study abroad at the host institution continues to fall within the parameters of the Learning Contract agreed on departure.

Students are required to contact the study abroad Coordinator at least once per semester whilst abroad to confirm the details of their programme of study.

Students are also expected to attend re-entry meetings with the Study Abroad Coordinator on their return. These involve an opportunity to debrief and feedback about student experiences on year abroad. They also involve an opportunity to ensure that all aspects of their transition to the final year of Study in Leeds have been considered, including issues such as dissertation tutor allocation, and module enrolment.

Student must pass the equivalent of 100 University of Leeds credits whilst abroad, in order to progress on an honours degree. Resit opportunities are available in the event of a student failing all or part of the in-course assessments at the host institution or for failure to take sufficient credits as per the Learning Contract. Resit opportunities will be offered on a case by-case basis depending on the circumstances of the student and the host institution. Full details of the criteria for passing the module are provided in the Learning Contract which will be signed by students prior to the Year Abroad.
