Module summary
This module will examine the role of learning in the aetiology, maintenance and treatment of a number of psychological disorders. The module will include an associative learning approach to: Anticipatory Nausea and Vomiting Psychosis Anxiety disorders Compulsivity disorders DepressionObjectives
On completion of this module, students should:1. Understand the fundamental psychological processes involved in learning
2. Evaluate the role these processes play in psychological disorders

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Evaluate evidence concerning basic associative learning processes
2. Evaluate the role of associative learning in psychological disorders
Skills outcomes
1. Students will have the opportunity to develop skills in the selection, evaluation and application of published research relating to the role of associative learning in the aetiology, maintenance and treatment of psychological disorders. Students will develop their evaluation skills through the seminar sessions which will require the preparation, presentation and discussion of relevant research.
2. Students will develop a critical understanding of the contribution of various research methods and approaches to the understanding of learning Students will have the opportunity to develop communication skills by way of engaging in written and oral argumentation.
Syllabus
There will be 10 x 1 hour lectures and 5 x 1hr seminars
1. General principles of associative learning
2. Evidence for role of learning in Anticipatory Nausea and vomiting
3. Changes in associative learning in psychosis
4. Phobias
5. Depression

Private study
Students will be expected to do 5 hours reading per lecture, and 5 hours of reading per seminar.They will be expected to spend 25 hours revising for the exam, and 34 hours on completing a coursework essay.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
