Module summary
This course is designed to ensure that Masters level graduates are able to: (a) understand the rationale and key principles of systematic reviews, and (b) undertake narrative systematic reviews that meet the standards laid out in the PRISMA-P (https://www.equator-network.org/reporting-guidelines/prisma-protocols/) and PRISMA statements (http://www.prisma-statement.org/). Students should be confident in managing the systematic review process, extracting data, and narratively synthesising evidence from academic journals, developing a range of skills suitable for future employability. Objectives
1. Develop confidence in literature searching skills in line with the PICOS framework.2. Equip students with the skills to manage and screen texts in a suitable database.
3. Facilitate students to take a disciplined and systematic approach to data extraction and application of risk of bias judgements.
4. Enable students to synthesise and evaluate the resulting evidence in an independent, PRISMA compliant systematic review.
The teaching strategy is problem-based learning, affording the opportunity for practical application of the framework guidelines and processes being presented, ensuring students are confident in the methods required for the assessment and achievement of outcomes. Students work in groups to conduct literature searches and screening. Reports write-ups are individual pieces of work.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the ability to complete the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Formulate a question and develop search terms based on the PICOS framework.
2. Manage and screen references and full texts in a database.
3. Undertake data-extraction and make risk-of-bias judgements reliably.
4. Follow PRISMA-P and PRISMA guidelines and narratively synthesise evidence, producing a PRISMA compliant systematic review.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the ability to complete the following skills learning outcomes:
1. The ability to search literature effectively and systematically, using suitable IT applications.
2. Group working and collaborative skills.
3. Application of literature searching, bias checking, data analysis and synthesis of information skills to applied domains, identifying and addressing real world problems.
4. Develop high level written communication skills.
5. Critical evaluation skills.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Prior to submission of the final report, in week 8 there will be a quiz session directly related to the summative assessment. Students will be provided with questions relating to key aspects of the systematic review process and format. Academic staff will provide feedback on students’ responses, ensuring understanding of the systematic review process, along with the criteria and requirements for success on the summative assessment. In the second half of most sessions, module leader will consult with each group and answer any questions they have about the skills they are learning and implementing during the set exercises for that session. Feedback and guidance will be provided where necessary.
