Module summary

This module gives you a basic knowledge of the Russian alphabet, vocabulary and grammar, and will develop your basic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Emphasis will be placed on those areas of the language and grammar that are particularly difficult for native speakers of English. By the end of the module you will be able to communicate on a range of everyday topics and to read and write simple texts.

Objectives

The objectives of this module are to introduce you to the pronunciation, alphabet and script of Russian, the case system of Russian nouns, adjectives and pronouns and the basic forms of the verb. It also aims to furnish you with a vocabulary that will enable you to understand spoken and written Russian within several topics, and allow you to express yourself in spoken and written Russian using the vocabulary that you will have acquired. These objectives will be achieved through a series of grammar lectures and small group practical classes with a communicative focus.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module you will demonstrate your ability to:
1. understand the basic grammar rules of Russian;
2. read simple texts on a variety of non-specialist subjects;
3. comprehend authentic spoken Russian relating to the topics covered and respond on these topics using appropriate vocabulary and grammatical constructions;
4. produce simple, structured pieces of creative writing.

Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module you will demonstrate your ability to:
5. organise your time effectively and work independently to consolidate material covered in class;
6. use digital resources for a range of language learning tasks;
7. adopt effective and proactive language learning strategies.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

There will be short weekly homework tasks and regular written and oral exercises not formally assessed for the purposes of formative feedback. Feedback will be given on the class tests to support revision for the OTLA. Class participation will also be used to monitor progress.
