Module summary

Important: places on this course are limited, and will be granted on a first- come, first-serve basis, but only after Russian students for whom Russian is a named part of their degree have been enrolled. Expanding upon the knowledge acquired in Semester 1, this module focuses on the acquisition of a range of essential grammatical constructions and develops students’ speaking and writing skills in preparation for the Year Abroad. All aspects of the language will be developed further, enabling students to progress along the path to the bright future that knowledge of the language offers.

Objectives

This module focuses on the development of reading, listening, speaking and writing skills through a variety of language exercises. On completion of the module your knowledge of Russian grammar will be at or slightly above A-Level standard and you will have acquired a vocabulary that will allow you to speak and write effectively on a number of structured topics covered during the semester.
Students will be prepared for their period of study in Russia by regular use of authentic written and audio-visual material in a variety of registers and styles.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will:
- have consolidated their knowledge of Russian grammar, demonstrating a good command of the Russian case system, a basic knowledge of verbal aspect and the ability to write and speak using all verb tenses;
- have acquired a vocabulary that allows them to understand and translate/interpret spoken and written Russian in several registers.
- be able to produce structured pieces of creative writing on a number of topics covered during the semester;
- be able to converse on a number of topics using appropriate vocabulary and grammatical constructions.

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module students will:
- have a solid grounding in the Russian language;
- demonstrate good linguistic and analytical skills;
- have acquired skills essential for successful independent language learning;
- demonstrate good presentation and communication skills;
- be familiar with a number of electronic resources for studying Russian and other languages and be able to type in Russian.

Syllabus

This module continues the practical introduction to the Russian language provided by Beginning Russian 1. Vocabulary, grammar and communicative exercises will be introduced progressively to enable students to gradually expand their active and passive language skills.
Particular emphasis is placed on the areas of Russian grammar that pose difficulties to native speakers of English.
Students will also be exposed to authentic Russian through the medium of reading texts and recorded material.

Private study

150 hours of private study and independent learning to supplement in-class tuition:
- Preparation for and follow-up after each class
- Completing regular homework assignments
- Preparation for assessment

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

There will be short weekly homework tasks and regular written and oral exercises not formally assessed for the purposes of formative feedback.
Feedback will also be given on the class test to support revision for the invigilated exam as well as the listening and oral exams.
Class participation will also be used to monitor progress.
