High proficiency in listening and speaking Russian (equivalent to minimum CEFR B2, as well as basic reading proficiency in Russian, as ascertained by screening at university application stage

Module summary

This module is intended for students who are heritage speakers of Russian, who may use Russian as their first or second language with family and thus have high proficiency in listening, speaking and oral interaction. The module is designed to develop your written language, metalinguistic skills and your intercultural competence. You will achieve this through consolidating and learning new grammar points, and conducting an independent language project.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to develop all aspects of language competence in heritage speakers of Russian. The objective will be for you to have reached a minimum proficiency in written Russian at least equivalent to CEFR level A2 and be working towards CEFR level B1. The aim and objective will be achieved through the provision of a weekly grammar class targeted at linguistic accuracy, together with the production of an independent language project supported by individual supervision.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module you will demonstrate your ability to:
1. demonstrate a solid grasp of the foundations of Russian grammar and the principles underpinning them
2. produce structured pieces of independent writing in Russian on a self-selected topic, demonstrating grammatical accuracy
3. extract important information and parse key arguments in Russophone audio and/or written materials
4. show a reasonable level of lexical precision, demonstrating an awareness of a range of semantic and pragmatic variables
5. use linguistic corpora and other online sources to check the authenticity of your language use.

Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module you will demonstrate your ability to:
6. use skills of interpretation and analysis
7. express your thoughts clearly, coherently and with focus in both written and oral Russian
8. use the Cyrillic alphabet with confidence in digital contexts
9. show intercultural understanding and awareness of Russophone cultural contexts
10. work independently and on your own initiative

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

There will be short weekly homework tasks associated with the weekly grammar class not formally assessed for the purposes of formative feedback. Feedback will also be given on class tests to support the final submission of the language project. Class participation and individual supervision will also be used to monitor progress.
