Module summary

The module will involve 3 contact hours of Russian per week. The module will use an integrated approach to teaching language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) in a variety of communicative situations, types of texts and registers. The module will be structured around complex grammar phenomena and topic related issues. We will cover on average 5-6 topics per year.The use of material organised around a range of diverse topics will broaden students' vocabulary and cultural awareness. On completion of this module, students should be able to:- demonstrate sophisticated receptive and productive language skills;- show a consolidated and extended knowledge and understanding of complex structures and registers in Russian;- communicate fluently and appropriately with a high degree of grammatical accuracy in Russian;- demonstrate a broad vocabulary and cultural awareness.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- demonstrate sophisticated receptive and productive language skills;
- show a consolidated and extended knowledge and understanding of complex structures and registers in Russian;
- communicate fluently and appropriately with a high degree of grammatical accuracy in Russian;
- demonstrate a broad vocabulary and cultural awareness.

Learning outcomes
1. demonstrate competence in understanding and applying grammatical rules and structures at an advanced level;
2. show awareness, at an advanced level, of different registers in written and spoken Russian;
3. - demonstrate consolidation and significant progression in their knowledge of Russian society, culture and institutions, acquired through language learning.

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module students should, with regard to receptive skills, be able to:
- understand authentic Russian speech, audio recordings and written texts, to an advanced level;
- draw and assimilate appropriate vocabulary from teaching and self-study materials, appropriate for use in real life and professional situations;
- recognize and identify complex grammatical and syntactical patterns in the language materials.

With regard to productive skills, they should be able to:
- demonstrate an evenly balanced distribution of well-honed skills in Russian language, specifically in speaking and writing;
- demonstrate a capacity for sophisticated analysis of texts (journalistic, literary and other types), presupposing detailed and up-to-date knowledge of Russian society, culture and institutions;
- research topics and prepare materials for public presentations and to deliver presentations in Russian;
- formulate articulate arguments for classroom discussions, either for or against a given proposition, and to take an active part in such discussions;
- communicate orally in Russian effectively and at an advanced level being aware of register and vocabulary as appropriate to the given communicative situation.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- Throughout both semesters, practice oral and written assignments will be set regularly, mimicking the form of the formally assessed assignments, in order to familiarise students with the assessment format.
- These non-assessed assignments will be followed by both individual and group feedback, which may be in oral or written form as appropriate.
- Class participation will also be used to monitor progress.
