Module summary
This module is designed to introduce students to the study skills required to succeed at university. The module is intended to encourage students to understand the purpose of study skills and to apply, practice and develop these skills on an ongoing basis. The skills section of the module is frontloaded, delivered intensively over an initial period of Foundation level study. Thereafter students must apply the skills acquired to demonstrate learning in social science subjects including Criminology and Politics.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:-- study social sciences and successfully complete a variety of assessment types.
- demonstrate 4 key skills (critical thinking, identification of appropriate literature, basic academic writing and successful use of Leeds Harvard referencing).
- apply these skills to demonstrate learning in relation to introductory debates in criminology and politics.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Demonstrate ability to think critically about social scientific topics.
2. Conduct literature search and identify relevant and appropriate social scientific information.
3. Demonstrate basic academic writing skills.
4. Cite and reference different types of sources using Leeds Harvard format.
5. Apply skills to substantive study of politics and criminology topics.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
1.Communicate information and technical concepts in written and verbal form.
2. Apply critical thinking to a variety of social, political and criminological topics.
3. Evidence academic writing abilities through essay submissions.
4. Accurately deploy academic language in essays and class discussion.
5. Reference appropriate source materials using Leeds Harvard referencing system.
