Module summary

This module provides an introduction to key social challenges facing the contemporary world. Drawing upon diverse global contexts the module examines phenomena such as climate change, the legacies of colonialism, the rise of populism and misinformation, and demonstrates the contributions that the social sciences can make to addressing these.

Objectives

The aims and objectives of this module are to:
• Provide an introduction to major social issues in a gloablised world.
• Describe and explain how these issues are unequally experienced.
• Explain the value of social sciences in addressing these challenges.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Describe and explain the importance of major social issues affecting the contemporary world.
2. Explain the unequal ways that these issues are experienced.
3. Explain the value of social sciences in addressing these issues.

Skills Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
1. Apply critical thinking skills to a range of social issues
2. Present complex information on social issues verbally
3. Create digital content showcasing social issues using appropriate software package
4. Manage time appropriately to meet targets for completion of presentation
5. Communicate complex information, including concepts, verbally and in written form
