Module summary
This module covers a range of topics related to the central themes of understanding and working formally and informally with children and young people. The module introduces students to theories relating to the nature of childhood and youth, conducting research and working with this group, the contemporary issues children and young people face, and how these are understood and dealt with in professional practice and policy making. The module aims to contribute to students employability and life-long skills. The module builds on the convenors research interests in this area and intends to appeal to students possibly wanting to work with children and young people. The module will entail a one-hour lecture on each issue followed by one tutorial per week to discuss the key issues covered in the lecture and readings.Objectives
To bridge research, policy and practice to enable students to analyse key contemporary debates across childhood and youth, and everyday lives. Themes include formal and informal education as well as professional practice. Key concepts include the interconnections of age; gender/sexuality; and, class.On completion of the module, student should be able to:
- Demonstrate their understanding of the main theoretical and policy perspectives relating to the issues covered
- Contribute to informed debate in relation to issues surrounding children and young people
- Critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of professional practice and policy responses to these issues
Learning outcomes
In terms of intellectual, practical and transferable skills, students should be able to:
- Carry out independent study and evidence further reading
- Engage in critical reasoning and informed debate
- Synthesise arguments drawn from a variety of sources (academic and otherwise)
- Communicate this effectively in speech and writing

Private study
Independent reading and scholarship is essential to the successful completion of the module. For each week, students are expected to undertake private study and independent learning.140 hours preparation for tutorials and lectures/online learning units. 28 hours preparation for assessment.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
