Module summary

This module provides students with a unique opportunity to support the local community and enhance their employability through working in collaboration with local organisations. The module has a very different structure to all other modules. Students will undertake a research project at an external organisation, based locally in Leeds or elsewhere and will take their degree-related knowledge and skills into these non-academic contexts.

Objectives

Students will apply their subject-specific knowledge in a context ‘beyond the university’ and, in doing so, acquire a broad and deep understanding of the contemporary relevance of social and public policy, and of issues related to social and public policy as they affect the work of various organisations. The specific objectives and parameters for each project will be agreed between the School and the external partner. Students will be expected to carry out a minimum of 50 hours at or on behalf of the organisation on their project and they will have a designated academic supervisor within the School of Sociology & Social Policy as well as a Project Supervisor from the external organisation or partner.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students will be expected to be able to:
1. Demonstrate critical knowledge and understanding of the relevance of social and public policy to the work of one or more contemporary organisations (public, private or third-sector)
2. Use their knowledge and understanding of one or more specific topics to produce a report on a contemporary issue to which this knowledge and understanding is relevant
3. Demonstrate the ability to reflect critically on the application of the academic study of Social and Public policy, and the skills acquired, to situations and problems beyond the university context
4. Demonstrate the ability to communicate relevant subject-specific knowledge to a non-specialist audience

Skills Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
1. Develop technical and IT skills for gathering and analysing public policy data
2. Communicate effectively to a diverse audience by employing a range of oral and written techniques
3. Develop analytical and critical thinking capabilities required for advising stakeholders on decisions
4. Employ effective decision-making techniques within complex research settings
5. Critically and reflectively engage in the development of professional/disciplinary approaches to social and public policy
