Objectives
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to demonstrate advanced understanding of conceptual and theoretical debates within the sociology of racism and their implications for understanding and challenging problems of racism and racial inequality.This module also provides the opportunity to engage with current debates in this field through involvement in CERS weekly seminars and also attendance at WUN White Spaces Network masterclasses.
Syllabus
Conceptual and theoretical debates within the sociology of race and racism and their implications for understanding and challenging these issues across the globe.
The module will also cover specific substantive areas including:
- Historical origins of race - pre-modern racisms
- Race, science and genomics
- Theorising racism and blobal racialisation
- Racist violence
- Rethinking roma
- Racisms in communist and post-communist contexts
- Racial representation and the media
- Prospects for a post-racial world
