Objectives

On completion of this module, students will be able to assess sociological approaches to health, illness and medicine, and review related empirical research.

- Medicalisation and medical dominance
- Social patterns and inequalities in health status
- Illness states, lay beliefs and behaviour, the practitioner-patient relationship
- Consumerism and self-help
- Alternative medicine and therapies
- Health care division of labour
- Organisation and management of health care services
- Health policy and politics
- Healthism and late modern culture.
