Module summary

This module provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate higher level research and communication skills through the production of an extended piece of written work in the form of an applied project report.

Objectives

This module provides students with the option of undertaking an applied project with external partners in public, private and third sector organisations
* To extend students’ critical understanding of key issues, debates and theoretical perspectives pertaining to inequalities and/or media, culture and society;
* To provide and consolidate students’ ability to progress and conduct small scale research projects with particular reference to the needs and concerns of a partner organisation;
* To produce a synopsis and presentation of findings, or commensurate resources, which engage and inform a non-academic audience, and to reflect on this learning experience as part of the final assessed project work.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

By the end of the module students will be expected to:

1. Demonstrate critical knowledge and understanding of research on inequalities and/or media, culture and society;

2. Critically analyse the manifestation of and processes shaping social inequalities, or shaping contemporary phenomena in culture, media and society;

3. Use this knowledge and understanding to design and carry out small scale research on a relevant contemporary issue;

4. Critically reflect on the applicability of findings to the wider social, cultural and economic context.

5. Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of research strategy and design;

6. Demonstrate a critical awareness of the methodological issues and ethics involved in conducting research;

7. Demonstrate the ability to communicate relevant knowledge to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

Academic skills

1. Apply critical thinking skills to a range of social issues

2. Deploy system thinking skills to a variety of social debates

3. Communicate complex information, including concepts, verbally and in written form

4. Present complex information on social issues verbally

5. Create digital content showcasing social issues using appropriate software package

6. Manage time appropriately to meet targets for completion of presentation

7. Employ ethical practices in the use of multiple academic sources to support your understanding of own work
