Year running 2024/25

Pre-requisite qualifications

Students must have studied high-school level chemistry (e.g. GCSE Single Chemistry/Double Science or equivalent) but must not have studied chemistry post- high-school (i.e. if they have A-level Chemistry at Grade A-C or equivalent (e.g. selected foundation years and international schemes) they cannot register for this module.

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Module summary

The module covers basic inorganic chemistry including structure of the atom, chemical formulae, chemical equations, quantitative chemistry calculations, chemical equilibrium, pH and redox and their environmental applications.

Objectives

The main aim of this module is to provide a background in basic inorganic chemistry theory for students without post high-school chemistry training, drawing throughout on examples taken from the field of Earth and Environmental Sciences. In particular, to equip students with the chemistry required to undertake Level 2 Geology and Environmental Sciences modules.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Describe the atomic structure of atoms, write the electron configuration for elements (and ions) and understand how it relates to their position in the periodic table.
2. Predict the compounds elements will form, they type of chemical bonding they will have, and how this influences physical properties.
3. Predict the products of chemical reactions, write chemical equations and perform quantitative chemistry calculations.
4. Describe and perform calculations related to chemical equilibria, pH, redox reactions.
5. Apply the above skills to case studies in Earth and environmental sciences.

Skills learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
1. Problem solving and analytical skills.
2. The ability to understand, interpret, analyse and manipulate data.
