Module summary
The module aims to develop a foundation of key academic skills for students to build on during their degree, underpinned by relevant and contemporary topics of study. Students will learn how to research, plan and write a literature review, as well as to engage with and respond to feedback on assignments. They will be introduced to the design, implementation and writing up of research through field work experience. Objectives
The aim of this module is to introduce students to a number of key academic skills, which will underpin their study. The objectives are to:- Introduce academic literature as a key source of information, explain the peer review process and the need for referencing
- Guide students in structuring acritical academic literature review on a relevant topic
- Encourage students to engage with feedback and apply it to future assignments
- Provide an opportunity for students to engage with primary and secondary data sources through field work
- Guide students in writing up a research report based on the field work
- Build community in the student cohort
The learning activities are a mixture of overview lectures and smaller group teaching where students are encouraged to interact and explore aspects of the above objectives in a supportive environment. Field work experience allows for hands-on experience of research and opportunities for building community within the cohort and between students and staff.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following module learning outcomes (MLO 1-4) relevant to the subject:
MLO1: Demonstrate understanding of the role of academic literature, and how to reference a range of sources of information
MLO2: Document conceptual and practical experience of the research process, including collecting and analysing data
MLO3: Develop understanding and experience of how to structure academic writing
MLO4: Illustrate engagement with feedback from assignments
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes (SL01-4):
SLO1: Develop foundational academic skills in critical thinking, presenting research, and writing up academic research in concise reports
SLO2: Demonstrate basic digital literacies through appropriate use of bibliographic sources
SLO3: Display work-ready skills through collaboration and communication in group work and fieldwork presentation
SLO4: Exemplify foundational research skills through data collection, data analysis and reporting on fieldwork
SLO5: Demonstrate core critical literacies as applied to context of natural-flood management in Hebden Bridge

For students unable to attend the fieldwork or who ask for mitigating circumstances for participating in group work, data from previous years will be shared so that they can develop and record an individual presentation to be shared with the module leader. Students whose presentations fail will be asked to re-write their presentation in response to the feedback they were given (in line with MLO4). Students who fail the fieldwork or were unable to attend will also be asked to share a 250-word reflection on their participation in group activities in seminars and what they feel they have learned through the process (SLO3). Summer resits will be available for students who fail the research report component. They will be able to resubmit an improved version of the same report.
