Module summary
In this module students will learn the theory and practice of gravity and magnetic methods as applied to sub-surface interpretation - especially resource exploration; they will also have an introduction to EM methods.Objectives
To understand the application of gravity and magnetic methods to subsurface interpretation - especially resource exploration; to understand the procedures of gravity and magnetic data acquisition and processing, such that they can take part in operations or review the work of others; to apply processing and interpretation tools to derive geological information from gravity and magnetic data sets. To understand the fundamentals of EM methods and how they might be applied.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have acquired an understanding of the practical uses of gravity and magnetic surveys and how they fit into the general process of subsurface interpretation - especially resource exploration. They should be able to:
- Contribute to discussion and planning of gravity and magnetic surveys, considering both theoretical and practical factors
- Plan and execute the processing of gravity and magnetic data
- Perform geological interpretation of gravity and magnetic data together with other information
- Assess the application of EM methods to address geological problems
- Evaluate their own work and the work of others
The learning outcomes will be assessed using a short data-processing report and an independent written report.
Syllabus
The role of gravity and magnetic methods in resource exploration and subsurface interpretation in general; causes of gravity and magnetic anomalies; gravity and magnetic data acquisition (land, marine, airborne, space); gravity and magnetic data reduction; gridding and levelling of gravity and magnetic data; data enhancement processing and lineament mapping; magnetic depth estimation; gravity and magnetic data modelling and inversion; integrated interpretation incorporating gravity and magnetic data; principles of EM Theory; MT, CSEM, MTEM methodology and application.

The re-sit for this module takes the form of a 2,000 word report based on reviewing and analysing published papers. The re-sit mark provides a new alternative mark for the whole Module. First attempt re-sits will take a similar form to the original assessment.
