Module summary
Within this module, we examine the key strategies and policies for climate change mitigation and adaptation as well as the multiple pathways through which human-environment interaction is governed. A central focus of the module is how the alleged limitations of conventional state-led climate and environmental governance have given way to a proliferation of 'new' and dynamic modes of governance where centres of authority are diffuse and state-market-civil society distinctions blur. We explore changing modes of climate and environmental policy and governance within and between the international, regional, national and local levels of analysis. The course illustrates these ongoing processes through the use of practical examples and case studies from both developed and developing countries. The lectures and seminars engage critically with the core readings and showcase the wide-range of research being undertaken within the Sustainability Research Institute.Objectives
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should:
1. Explain the nature, influence and limits of different climate and environmental policy and governance strategies and approaches.
2. Evaluate the significance of scale in climate and environmental governance.
3. Critique the different roles that governments, markets and civil society actors can play in influencing climate and environmental policy and governance.
4. Identify and appraise cross-cutting issues such as community governance and conservation, social justice and decarbonisation, and the governance of the Anthropocene.
5. Demonstrate improved critical thinking, written, group collaboration and public communication skills.
