Module summary
This module is aimed at students with a prior knowledge of the Portuguese language (equivalent to minimum CEFR A2). In this module you will reinforce and improve your grammatical knowledge and accuracy, both in spoken and written Portuguese, and will develop the skills involved in aural and reading comprehension. You will reflect on the use of language and learn how to use language in different contexts including an academic context and formal situations. You will achieve this through consolidating and learning new grammar points and conducting an independent project. Topics include social and cultural issues relevant to understanding the Portuguese-speaking world.Objectives
This module aims to consolidate and further develop students’ Portuguese language skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, focussing on grammar in context and the usage of grammar in authentic communicative situations according to different contexts and registers, enhancing students’ language awareness. The aims and objectives will be achieved through the provision of weekly languages classes targeted at linguistic accuracy, together with the production of an independent project supported by individual supervision.Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module you will demonstrate your ability to:
1. express your thoughts clearly, coherently and with focus in both written and spoken Portuguese in an appropriate register
2. understand the foundations of Portuguese grammar and the principles underpinning them
3. show a reasonable level of lexical precision, demonstrating an awareness of a range of semantic and pragmatic variables
4. produce structured pieces of independent writing in Portuguese on a selected topic, demonstrating grammatical accuracy
5. develop and communicate both through writing and speaking an understanding of different Lusophone cultural aspects.

6. organize and present ideas within the framework of a structured and reasonable argument
7. organise the time effectively and work independently on your own initiative

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Written and oral feedback is regularly given to students to identify and address any difficulties at an early stage:* Students will receive formative feedback from the tutor of their oral and written production during language classes.
* Students will receive formative feedback from the tutor on written tasks through homework set weekly.
* Students will have some self-assessed homework, which will be set by the tutor. Answers for those pieces of homework will be available on Minerva.
* Students will receive written feedback on all pieces of assessed work.
