Module summary
This is a fast moving 60-hour course designed for students who have an A-level in a foreign language. Its first objective is to develop their Catalan language skills (A2 of the European Reference Framework). Considerable emphasis will be placed on communication in the language. At the same time, students will be taught the main grammatical structures and their listening and comprehension skills will be developed. In addition, it will introduce them to a number of aspects of contemporary Catalan society and culture. Topics will be introduced through a number of lectures and then reinforced in the language classes. By the end of the course students will be able to understand spoken Catalan quite well, hold a basic conversation, read a wide variety of texts, write simple letters and notes. Furthermore, they will have developed an understanding of Catalan culture, society and identities.Objectives
The key objectives are that on completing the module students will:- Understand and utilise basic Catalan grammatical constructions
- Produce, understand and translate Catalan in a variety of everyday contexts
- Write letters and short essays in Catalan
- Show that they understand Catalan culture and society.
Learning outcomes
1. Good understanding of spoken Catalan
2. Good knowledge of the Catalan grammar (level A2)
3. Ability to conduct an everyday conversation in Catalan
4. Ability to read a range of Catalan texts and write simple notes and letters in Catalan.
5. Good understanding of the historical and cultural roots of modern Catalonia.

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

9. Critical thinking: cultivate critical thinking skills in the context of Catalan language and culture
10. Independent working: improve the ability to review and consolidate independently the content that has been seen in the course, and also the ability to work independently on different tasks and projects

12. Media, culture and creativity: improve skills in using media and social media, with a specific focus on the Catalan language and culture, and boost creativity in these contexts
13. Social and cultural sensibility: cultivate awareness and sensitivity to Catalan social and cultural contexts
Syllabus
This module aims, on the one hand, to equip students with a basic grounding in Catalan grammar and an ability to produce, understand and translate spoken and written Catalan in a variety of everyday contexts. This requires both covering basic grammatical structures and developing reading and writing skills applied to a variety of analytical, rhetorical and communicative contexts. In addition, students will gain an understanding of the historical and cultural roots of modern Catalan identity.
