Module summary
The aim of this module is to familiarise students with the key issues relating to the contemporary politics and societies of Spain and Latin America.This is a language skills consolidation module. Therefore, A2 CEFRL (AS equivalent) knowledge of Spanish language is required as it is fully taught and assessed in Spanish. Learning outcomes will be assessed through a reading comprehension/writing exam in Semester 1 and an essay in Semester 2, both in Spanish.Objectives
The objectives of this module are:- to consolidate students’ language skills in the target language through a focus on contextualisation, in support of their core language skills module;
- to encourage students to reflect on ideas such as the question of identity and culture in a contemporary socio-political and intercultural context;
- to develop students' skills in the analysis and discussion of a range of primary and secondary sources in the target language;
- to develop students' ability to craft their own arguments and use evidence to support them, in the target language.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
- Evidence their understanding of the societies, politics and cultures of the target-language countries, in the target language;
- Organise and present ideas within the framework of a structured and reasonable argument.
On completion of the module students should be well placed to follow more specialised modules in Hispanic Studies and Spanish language in level three.

Developing the 4 language skills (writing, speaking, listening and reading) in the target language to CEFRL B1-.
Syllabus
The module syllabus will typically include a series of lectures on key issues relating to the contemporary politics and societies of Spain and Spanish America, such as gender, religion, immigration, race, environment, etc. In these lectures students will practice their listening and reading skills in the target language. Lectures will be supported by small group seminars, where students will practice their writing and speaking skills in the target language.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students’ participation in seminars will provide opportunities for feedback on their progress. Feedback on the first exam in Semester 1 will aid students in preparing for subsequent assessments and will identify any problems at an early stage.Methods of assessment

The essay will be written in the target language, hence the selected word length which is shorter than standard essay lengths at this level where work is produced in English. Students will be assessed on their writing skills in the target language as well as on the content/argument of their essay.
