An A-level in a Romance language / approval by module coordinator by Level Test.

Module summary

This module aims to take your Catalan up an intermediate (high A-Level) standard. By the end of a module you should be able to follow television and radio programmes in Catalan and understand the main ideas expressed in complex texts regarding both concrete and more abstract subjects. These will include technical texts in specialised, professional fields. Also, when interacting with native speakers you should be able to make yourself understood effectively, express a point of view with a degree of fluency and of spontaneity, and set forth the advantages and the inconveniences of various options. Finally, you will be taught to write on a wide range of subjects, without committing many basic grammatical errors.

Objectives

This module aims to enhance and consolidate structures learnt in Level 1 Catalan. Students will practise the four basic language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) in a variety of contexts.

At the same time, as part of the learning process, students will be exposed to texts dealing with aspects of Catalan history, literature and culture. Upon completion of this module students will be able to express themselves fluently and accurately in both Catalan and English.

Learning outcomes
On completing this module students would be expected to achieve the equivalent of a high A-Level standard (between Level B1+ and Level B2 of the European Reference Framework). They should be able to speak everyday Catalan with confidence and also be able to hold basic conversations in specific professional fields. As part of this process they should be able to distinguish between registers and styles.

In addition, they will be able to follow - to a significant degree - the meaning of non-specialised radio and television programmes, understand and utilise key grammatical structures, read relatively complex texts and be able to write on a range of subjects committing few major grammatical errors.

Skills outcomes
- The ability to understand to a significant degree non-specialised radio and television programmes
- The ability to appreciate and use nuanced language at an intermediate level. This should include the ability to interact and negotiate orally in everyday situations, and hold basic conversations in more complex professional fields. This will require the ability to distinguish between style and register.
- The ability to understand and utilise key grammatical constructions
- The ability to read relatively complex texts in a variety of fields.
- The ability of write on a variety of subjects while not committing many basic grammatical errors.


Syllabus

This is an integrated intermediate level Catalan language module which will take students up to a high A Level standard. Its aim is to enhance and consolidate the four basic language skills learnt in Level 1 Catalan (listening, speaking, reading and writing), and practise them in a variety of contexts.

It will consist of three language classes per week (63 hours in total). Two of these classes will focus on grammatical structures, writing and reading, and the review of tasks undertaken at home. The third hour will centre on listening and oral skills.

Private study

- Independent learning and study time will take up around 140 hours over the two semesters.
- Students will do a piece of homework every week which the teacher will go over in class the following in week. I
- In addition, they will need to prepare for their assessed work (two tests, two essays, and both oral and written exams).

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- Students will do a piece of homework each week which the teaching will go through in class in the following week.
- In addition, students will get feedback on the two tests and two essays they do in the first and second semesters (worth 30% of the total mark).
