Module summary
This action-focused module aims at facilitating students’ transition to Spanish-speaking work environments in a reflective and economically-informed manner. Tapping into students’ global citizenship ethos, this module combines oral and written authentic professional tasks and reading and listening comprehension of authentic resources with critical discussion of economic topics of social and political importance, and with a global dimension, in the Latin-American and Spanish contexts. It is suitable for students with no previous knowledge of business/economics.Objectives
On completion of this module students will be able to communicate in Spanish, both orally and in writing, at the level of a proficient user (C1-C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference) in a number of professional contexts.The language of business and economics will be acquired and practised through the study of authentic texts from journalistic and political sources and the realisation of real-life professional tasks, both independently and as part of a team.
Students will also gain an insight in the economic and business topics covered.
Learning outcomes
Enhanced knowledge of specialised business and economics Spanish vocabulary on a number of relevant and up-to-date topics. Professional knowledge of stylistic and formal conventions in economics and business-related communication, both oral and written, in Spanish.
Understanding of economics and business topics such as basic macroeconomics, privatization and nationalisation, energy markets, economic integration, manufacturing, marketing and property.
Skills outcomes
- Tackling linguistically demanding and extended texts (heard or read) on economics and business topics in Spanish;
- summarising information from various spoken and written sources and reconstructing arguments in a coherent presentation on economics and business topics in Spanish;
- speaking spontaneously, fluently and precisely about a selection of economic and business topics in Spanish, differentiating shades of implicit meaning;
- using Spanish language flexibly and effectively for professional purposes;
- producing clear, well-structured, detailed texts, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices on economics and business topics in Spanish.
Syllabus
This module will introduce students to the use Spanish language in the context of contemporary business and economics topics in the Spanish-speaking world such as the economy of Latin-American countries, commercial and economic integration both in Latin-America and Europe, the energy markets in Latin-America, the manufacturing sector in Spain, marketing and the property market in Spain.
Students will write an investment report in Spanish and will have 2 different authentic tasks in the oral exam on the topics covered during the course. They will also have the option to be examined, in one of the two tasks of the oral exam, on the topics of one or two LinkedIn courses of their choice undertaken in Spanish as autonomous learning. These courses are free for our students as they are part of the UoL offering.
