Module summary

This module is designed to provide an overview of the workings of sexuality and gender within the Iberian and Latin American context over the nineteenth and twentieth century. It analyses these themes from a variety of analytical perspectives and utilizes materials from a range of sources. It seeks to illuminate historical and present process of the regulation of sexuality and to encourage students to engage with topics and theories that intersect in productive ways within Hispanic and Lusophone Studies.

Objectives

This one-semester module aims to introduce students to the complexities of historical analysis of questions surrounding the regulation of sexuality in Iberia and a number of Latin American countries.

Students should at the end of this module:
- be familiar with the various historical schools on the history of sexuality
- have a cogent and profound knowledge of the medical, social and political aspects of sexuality in Iberia and Latin America
- should be able to engage in coherent historical analysis of those questions
- and they should possess the tools to defend complex arguments in class and in assessed work.

Learning outcomes
This module will enable students to explore in considerable detail the regulation of sexuality within Iberia and Latin America over a long period of time, but with the emphasis on the nineteenth and twentieth century. Sociological, historical, literary and cultural methods of analysis will be employed to do and students should acquire an awareness of what these disciplines can offer Hispanic and Lusophone Studies and vice versa.
