Objectives

The module aims to provide students with an understanding of social and applied psychology in the domain of sport and exercise. Building on the introductory topics covered at level 1, this module focuses on the application of theory and empirical research to explain behaviour in sport and exercise contexts. The first part of the module focuses on the application of theory and empirical research to explain how thoughts, emotions and behaviours of individuals are influenced by social-psychological factors. These include the characteristics of the group environment and other group members, as well as processes that operate at a distinctly group level such as cohesion and communication. The second part of the module focuses on sport psychology as an applied discipline. This includes an emphasis on consultancy and ethical issues, theories of motivation and performance, and common psychological techniques used in sport.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should be able to;
- Explain key concepts and theories associated with group dynamics in sport;
- Examine the influence of personal and group attributes on group behaviour;
- Apply psychological theories associated with group dynamics to in order to understand interpersonal processes and group behaviour in sport;
- Explain consultancy and ethical issues relevant in an applied sport psychology setting;
- Apply psychological theories of motivation and performance in order to understand the emotions, thoughts and behaviours exhibited in sport;
- Evaluate the effectiveness of common psychological skill techniques in sport using empirical research.
