Objectives

This module aims to enable students to:
- Draw on and develop their knowledge and skills they have gained earlier in the programme;
- Critically examine the mechanistic underpinning of injury and performance from both a monodisciplinary (e.g. psychology, biomechanics, motor control, physiology), and interdisciplinary perspective;
- Consider the aetiology of injury from the perspective of the four sub disciplines of the sport and exercise sciences, in addition to examining how these link together to cause injury, or can be used to enhance performance;
- Be able to plan an experiment designed to enhance elite performance, using interdisciplinary knowledge and tools and assess the impact it will have on individuals, in addition to sports women and men more broadly.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- apply and develop knowledge and skills from previous levels;
- understand and explain the difference between mono-, multi- and interdisciplinary;
- explain the implications of working with different client groups;
- apply interdisciplinary analysis to a chosen issue pertinent to Sport and Exercise Science;
- critically assess the advantages and disadvantages of inter-disciplinary analysis for Sport and Exercise Science issues.


Syllabus

- Introduction to the course;
- Definitions of mono-, multi- and inter-disciplinary in Sport and Exercise Science;
- A multi- and mono- disciplinary assessment of the aetiology of overuse injuries;
- Four interdisciplinary keynote lectures chosen by the Sport and Exercise Science staff;
- Two staff-led seminars of contemporary issues taken from the keynote lectures;
- Group choice of an interdisciplinary topic related to Sport and Exercise Science;
- Oral presentations of the chosen interdisciplinary issues;

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Feedback from the essay is provided in writing early in Semester 1 in comparison to other modules. This will underpin essay skills prior to other hand in dates for work conducted in other modules. Feedback on this element will also be discussed in a feedback lecture. Feedback on the grant proposals is provided immediately as two members of staff ask questions and give an overview at the end of the student presentation. Feedforward is also provided on the standard feedback forms. Feedback on the impact cases will be provided within 3 weeks of submission by the two members of staff marking the oral component.
