Module summary
Exercise and health psychology provides the theoretical background that underpins the type of behaviour change that takes place during rehabilitation. This module will provide both research and practical examples of rehabilitation with an in-depth examination of exercise prescription. The module will look at exercise from a psychological perspective and consider how qualitative technique can be employed in research in the area. Consideration of maladaptive consequences of exercise on psychological health will also be considered.Objectives
This modules explore exercise and psychological health exploring key research in the area and examining the key theoretical models underpinning behavioural change.The objectives of the module are to:
- To equip students with a basic understanding of key theoretical models in exercise and psychological health;
- To provide students with knowledge from recent and relevant research that explores the antecedents of good practice in exercise and psychological health;
- Make students aware of the considerations needed when prescribing exercise from a psychological perspective;
- To expose the students to qualitative research methods.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Critically analyse research in the field of exercise and health psychology;
2. Describe the key theoretical models underpinning behaviour change;
3. Demonstrate an understanding of how exercise is used as an intervention to promote psychological health in rehabilitation;
4. Critically review the maladaptive consequences of exercise on psychological health;
5. Demonstrate a critical understanding of exercise prescription from a psychological perspective;
6. Qualitatively analyse experiences of sedentary behaviour and provide recommendations to enhance exercise adherence.
Skills outcomes
Students will be able to:
- demonstrate a critical understanding of theoretical theoretical models underpinning behaviour change;
- demonstrate critical understanding qualitative research;
- communicate and critically assess relevant information on a selected contemporary topic in exercise prescription.
Syllabus
In this module, students will explore a variety of topics related to exercise and psychological health.
These will include:
- exercise and quality of life;
- exercise and self-perceptions;
- mood and exercise;
- models of exercise behaviour;
- strategies and interventions to enhance exercise adherence during rehabilitation;
- dose-response debate;
- exercise dependence;
- body image and eating disorders in sport and exercise.
Many of these will be analysed in relation to the 'normal' population and a clinical population (eg clinically depressed or anxious individuals).

Private study: this includes the time associated with background reading for each /lecture/tutorial/seminar, and the time associated with the preparation and completion of the assessment.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students will be given formative feedback during the seminar sessions as they are guided through the assessment and given opportunities to develop their ideas in groups. In addition tutorials will be offered where students have the opportunity to discuss their assignments and gain feedback on draft submissions.- Formative feedback from seminar (weeks 2-5)
- Group presentations peer feedback (weeks 7-10).
