Module summary
The module will provide students with experience of SEM in practice by giving students hands-on practical experience of performing a range of duties at pitch side, consistent with professional practices. Topics covered will include trauma and return to play at pitch side, legal and ethical considerations in SEM practice, including use of drugs in sport (students will be expected to complete the UKAD Clean Sport Advisor Course online during this module), and two exercise testing practicals (providing the opportunity to extent basic knowledge of motor control and biomechanics). Pitch side placements for students to organise are available at a range of sports clubs and events. Students may in addition consider attending the London Marathon and Great North Run. A minimum of one event and one team match day should be completed as a part of the three compulsory placement sessions. Ideally, students should join a team in an assisting capacity and stay for the whole season, participating as much as they can e.g., one game a month. Over 12 weeks the students will be signposted to specific FIFA diploma modules in each week: e.g., Concussion and, SCAT, Doping and WADA, Ethics etc. There are no exams for this module; assessment consists of pitch side-attendance (detailed student log and SEM provider /signoff), a portfolio of evidence (e.g., CPD, conference attendance, pitch-side case studies etc.), and completion of one eLearning module (UKAD Clean Sport Advisor Course).Objectives
The objectives are for students to:- understand the medical requirements required at a sporting event and club both on competition days as well as out of competition;
- develop sufficient skills to enable effective practice;
- give advice around doping to athletes, and recognise the role of the SEM practitioner in the process;
- consider the ethical issues surrounding SEM practice.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
1) Employ knowledge and skills to manage common pitch side emergencies;

4) Discuss the ethical issues and dilemma raised in sport, particularly for a health care professional;
