Module summary
This module is an introduction to the basic concepts and practices of textile product innovation and textile product development. It combines inputs from textile technology, design, fashion and product design. It develops understanding of the methods and processes involved in the development of ideas from concept to commercially-viable textile materials and products. Case studies will illustrate the role of creative thinking, research, multi-disciplinary research collaboration, product prototyping and intellectual property management in textile product innovation and development. Objectives
This module aims to introduce strategic thinking and key skills for textile product development and innovation. Appropriate research methodologies will be introduced for novel ideas generation, and industrial design interfaces will be utilised to facilitate innovative thinking for the development of textiles products.Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
By the end of the module, students, will have acquired:
1: Investigate and identify opportunities for innovation within textiles product design and development.
2: Generate innovative ideas for the textile product design and development.
3: Critique textile product development to select advantageous design solutions.
4: Assemble innovative textile product designs using digital interfaces.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
5: Formulate solutions and adapt digital tools to achieve specific textiles product innovation.
6: Construct textiles product development ideas, demonstrating originality and imaginative thinking.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students will receive feedback, which is constructive and related to the assessment criteria, and includes guidance on how to improve for future assignments in each of the interim seminar discussions.Feedbacks on each initial idea proposed by the students will be given on the same week, and will be further discussed in seminars. Students’ progress are monitored through the biweekly presentation of their ideas and progress in seminars, feedbacks on students’ project ideas and approached will be given to each student and their groups in each seminar as well as formal oral presentations. Additional feedbacks and discussion with each student group or individuals will be available on office hours or through appointments
Methods of assessment
Coursework
Assessment type | Notes | % of formal assessment |
Report | Report | 80.00 |
Presentation | Presentation | 20.00 |
Total percentage (Assessment Coursework) | 100.00 |
For the assignment, the students will work in groups to produce a group project report (around 6250-6750 words) on the design and development of a new textile product including critical analysis of relevant published literature. This will assess the LOs 1, 3-6. The student groups and the assignment task will be setup in the week 14, and the students will be ask to submit their ideas to work on in the week 15 and the feedbacks will be given in the same week or by the week 16. The students will work with their team members on their project in regularly discussions and they will be required to report/present their progress in the five seminars, discussions will be conducted and feedbacks from peers and tutor(s) will be given on site. The report will be submitted via Minerva in the week 25, and the final feedback will be given with provisional marks (accounting for 80% of the marks) within 4 weeks. In week 21, each student will work with their group members to give an oral presentation of their project progress (on LO2) for 5-10 mins in a seminar session, this accounts for 20% of final module grade, and the feedbacks from peers and tutors will be given on site.
