Module summary
Taught through a combination of lectures and practical sessions, this module will enable students to fundamentally understand the technologies behind the production of textiles and clothing and how these affect creative possibilities and limitations for designers. This will encompass the full manufacturing chain (fibres, yarns, fabrics – knitted and woven, coloration, finishing, apparel manufacturing). Moreover, this module will introduce professional skills required to test and characterise textile material. The acquired knowledge will be contextualised by evaluating contemporary innovations in the field.Objectives
This module will develop fundamental understanding of textile materials, design elements, structures and technologies; encompassing the full manufacturing chain. The module includes lectures, seminars, and practical demonstrations in laboratories. The module will equip students with the skills to analyse textiles, and to contextualise the contemporary innovations in the field.Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. demonstrate a methodical understanding of the science and technology of textile materials; processing of materials in to yarns, knitted and woven fabrics; coloration and finishing; and apparel manufacturing;
2. demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the implications of technological processes and parameters on the design process.
3. Analyse flexible fibrous assemblies and accurately determine their components and the technological processes employed to produce them.
4. critically and creatively evaluate contemporary innovations in the field of textile sustainability and innovation.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
5. Develop understanding of laboratory work and outputs to reinforce theoretical understanding of the textile and apparel design technology.
6. Develop advanced skills in critically sourcing and reviewing literature to establish knowledge on the sustainable production of textiles and apparel products and its possibilities and limitations.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Formative Assessment 1 – Mock Class Exam This activity will help students to prepare for the exam and promote assessment literacy. The feedback will be given by peers, with the aid of model answers. Formative Assessment 2 – Review of Journal Article This assignment will help students to develop and rehearse their writing skills in preparation for final dissertation. This assignment will test writing, referencing and citation skills. The review will be submitted to ‘Turnitin’ and will allow students to self-reflect on the quality of independent critical thought in their submitted paper.Methods of assessment
