Module summary
This 10 credit module equips students with a broad understanding of freight transport and logistics systems, as seen from the perspectives of both society and the freight industry. The module explores the roles of all main freight transport modes, both individually and in combination, to explore how freight is moved. We look at a range of scales from global, looking at the role of freight transport as part of the modern globalised world economy, to local, exploring the issues relating to freight and logistics in servicing customers in urban areas. We focus on environmental problems relating to freight and logistics, such as the contribution to pollution and global warming, and consider how these problems can be reduced, and we consider the role of freight and logistics in key supply chains for society, such as food supply chains. On completion of this module, students will possess valuable skills in a field which is often neglected despite its importance for society and the economy, skills which are much sought after by transport consultancies and governmental organisations.Objectives
After completing this module, students will have a broad understanding of freight transport and logistics systems from the perspectives both of society and the freight industry, and across a range of scales from global to local.Learning outcomes
Students will develop skills in evaluating freight transport and logistics systems and the problems associated with them, with a focus on analysis of environmental problems and potential solutions to such problems.
Syllabus
Essentials of freight and logistics - freight transport modes and their characteristics, the role of transport as a key element of logistics and supply chains and the interactions between transport and other supply chain elements such as inventory management
Demand for freight transport - the drivers of freight demand and the factors affecting freight mode choice decisions
Global supply chains and international frieght transport - the roles played by each mode and the importance of intermodal systems
Environmental issues relating to global supply chains
City logistics - the role of freight and logistics in the modern urban economy the environmental and other problems of freight and logistics in urban areas and potential solutions
Key issues in food supply chains, particularly in urban areas
The changing nature of retailing and the implications for freight and logistics operations and the environment
