Module summary

This module will provide students with an understanding of the fundamental relationships involved in transport systems, the case for interventions in managing transport systems and future opportunities and challenges. Students will be able to contrast international approaches to transport planning and management and develop an appreciation of the contribution of different roles in the delivery of transport sector implementations, which will prepare them for the Transport Integrated Project module delivered in the following semester.

Objectives

The Shaping Transport Futures module will provide students with an understanding of the fundamental relationships involved in transport systems, their interactions with other sectors, and future opportunities and challenges. It will provide understanding of the case for interventions in managing transport systems. Students will be able to understand and contrast international approaches to transport planning and management and develop appreciation of the contribution of different roles in the delivery of transport sector implementations. Finally, students will be equipped with the fundamental techniques necessary to work in inter-disciplinary teams, which will prepare them for the Transport Integrated Project module delivered in the following semester

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Understanding of the fundamental elements and relationships involved in planning sustainable transport systems.
2. Understanding of the importance of sustainability for the transport sector through an appreciation of international contexts.
3. Understanding of the multi-disciplinarity of solutions for transport sustainability; delivered through streamed elements.

Skills Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

5. Academic skills: time management; critical thinking; academic writing; information searching; academic integrity; and referencing.
6. Work Ready Skills: Problem solving and analytical skills.
7. Technical skills, including:
7.1 Understanding of the transport system including the elements and their relationship;
7.2 Understanding of the importance of sustainability for improving future transport systems;
7.3 Understanding of the multi-disciplinarity of solutions to transport sustainability.
7.4 Appreciation of cross-disciplinary knowledge essential to collaborate with and integrate disciplinary approaches.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The Scholarship essay is formative feedback and designed to given an opportunity to: become familiar with Minerva; familiar with processes of submission eg deadlines and coversheets; practice critical thinking based essays; explore good scholarship and develop assessment literacy. This activity is timed so that the activity and the feedback are in advance of the credit-bearing assessed work. This work addresses LO 1 and 2; SO 5 and 6.
