Module summary
This module presents an overview and the foundations of transport engineering. Semester 2 modules TRAN5241M (Road Geometry & Infrastructure), TRAN5210M (Traffic Management), TRAN5761M (Safety of Road Transport) and TRAN5946M (Deterioration & Maintenance of Pavements) build on this module further providing opportunities to specialise in particular areas.Objectives
The module aims to familiarise students with the engineering aspects of the design of transport infrastructure.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to demonstrate:
- understanding of the principles of engineering design as they apply to transport systems;
- familiarity with the engineering design requirements associated with road construction, exposure to railway track construction and public transport infrastructure;
- appreciation of the environmental impacts of transport systems.
Syllabus
Highway design standards. Highway capacity. Principles of junction design. Principles of route location. Principles of horizontal and vertical alignment. Engineering aspects of road safety (inc signing & lighting). Principles of pavement design. Principles of railway track design. Environmental impacts (inc pollution, severance and noise). Design of public transport infrastructure.
