Module summary

This module provides the key knowledge and understanding needed to manage and operate the railway on a day-to-day basis. It recognises the interplay between passenger needs, safety and system performance.

Objectives

This module aims to cover the foundations of railway operations and management from a multidisciplinary perspective and discuss the main challenges faced in day-to-day operations within a complex railway industry.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1. Comprehensive understanding of the presence of different systems and agents in a railway industry.

2. Demonstrate knowledge and critical awareness of the foundations of routine operations in the railway.

3. Critical awareness of elements and theory relating to demand and supply such as travel demand, supply, costing, performance, fare, forecasting.

4. Critical awareness of elements and theory relating to Scheduling such as signalling, safety, timetabling, disruption and rescheduling, as well as life cycle cost and railway asset management.

Skills learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

5. Academic skills in terms of reflection, critical thinking, academic writing, referencing, information searching and academic integrity.

6. Sustainability skills in terms of systems thinking, critical thinking and information searching.

7. Work-ready skills in terms of communication, critical thinking, time management, technical/IT skills, decision-making and problem solving and analytical skills.

8. Technical skills in domain specific knowledge and expertise in railway operations and management and their potential applications.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Tutorial sessions will provide feedback opportunities. These will be scheduled between the two teaching periods and the assessment hand-in dates. This facilitates feedback on the first assessment before students undertake the second.
