Module summary

This module will develop students understanding of noise and air pollution in urban areas. The module covers urban pollution sources, processes and trends. The module also aims to equip Masters degree students with the skills necessary to analyse data. Practical experience of open-source innovative data analysis tools will be provided. Through analysis of complementary traffic flow, dispersing air-flows, noise and air pollution information, students' will learn through practical experience about the important interactions and processes that govern urban pollution.

Objectives

On completion of this module students should have developed a clear understanding of noise and air pollution in urban areas. They will become familiar with the sources, processes and trends of urban pollution. The module will review Government directives and Management strategies.
The course will enhance the students technical knowledge of traffic, vehicle emissions, meteorology, noise air pollution monitoring tools and modelling approaches. Practical experience of open-source innovative data analysis tools will also be provided. Through analysis of complementary traffic flow, dispersing air-flows, noise and air pollution information students should learn through practical experience about the important interactions and processes that govern urban pollution.

- Introduction to urban pollution issues and policy;
- Transport noise;
- Transport noise screening tools;
- Vehicle emissions and trends;
- Atmospheric dispersion processes and chemistry;
- Air Quality Management including an external speaker from the City of York;
- Introduction to 'R' for the effective manipulation and analysis of environmental data;
- Exploratory analysis of urban air quality data;
- Traffic - Vehicle Emission - Dispersion modelling approaches;
- Visual intrusion and aesthetics;
- Severance, including walking and cycling modes for short trips.

Private study

The students will be expected to read a number of key texts and papers to under-pin their knowledge of urban pollution.
The course assessment will involve submission of one scientific report and a 2,000 word essay.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Formative feedback on class contributions and understanding of the issues will be provided in the tutorials/practicals. Summative feedback will be provided in the form of one scientific report and a 2,000 word assessed essay. These will be set in weeks 4 and 8 of the module respectively and submitted in weeks 7 and 10.
