Module summary

Road collisions that result in injury and death are detrimental to both individuals and society. There is established evidence that links a range of factors to crash occurrence, including behaviour, the road environment and vehicle type. This module covers problem identification and solution development, in terms of policy, engineering and evaluation, as well as covering more broad topics of human capacity and limitations.

Objectives

This module aims to

- Establish a sound understanding of road safety issues associated with different road environments and road user groups

- Deliver an understanding of how road safety interventions can reduce crash likelihood and severity

- Develop student’s ability to identify crash patterns and apply appropriate solutions to tackling road safety issues.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1. Understand the contribution of different factors to crash causation

2. Identify road safety issues in terms of road environments and user type

3. Understand how effective management is a tool for identifying road safety objectives and delivering solutions

4. Evaluate priorities of countermeasures
