Objectives
On completion of this module students should have developed the capabilities to:- Identify and define a research problem and research gaps;
- Critically review the relevant literature;
- Collect, analyse and synthesise data;
- Present information in a logical and cohesive way;
- Understand the limitations of the work/problem;
- Elicit the appropriate conclusions;
- Communicate through a well-structured and written documents.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
1. Develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of one aspect of civil engineering including the underlying principles and an awareness of current and future developments within a chosen field of research.
2. Develop an appreciation of a range of approaches from within and outside traditional civil engineering and how these can be applied to engineering research.
3. Develop an ability to source, evaluate and analyse qualitative or quantitative data to solve problems within an engineering project and recognise where data is incomplete and how this may affect research outcomes.
4. Understand how to source, evaluate and analyse technical and non-technical literature and use this to articulate knowledge gaps and evaluate research outcomes.
5. Develop an appreciation of the need for engineers to behave in a professional and ethical way
6. Develop relevant practical and laboratory skills as appropriate for their project and also understand the need for relevant Health and Safety requirements to be taken into account within a research environment.
7. Develop the ability to plan and carry out a programme of research and make appropriate adjustments in response to challenges.
8. Develop and apply a range of skills including problems solving, critical analysis, communication and team working within a research environment

Syllabus
Students may undertake either a design project (typically one of a small number of pre-set projects) or an individual research project.
Projects are supervised on a one-to-one basis and assessment is by written report, all students make an individual submission.
