Objectives

The aim of this module is to help you become an independent competent user of English within your engineering degree programme. The course is built around the most common writing genres found across Undergraduate Engineering on the SWJTU-Leeds Joint Programme. The module will equip you with the academic writing and research tools that you can use to examine these genres and understand how engineers use language to communicate within your field. You will learn how to write different types of genres for academic and professional contexts, and you will also learn skills and strategies to help you apply this knowledge to your future writing needs. These needs may include your final Level 3 projects, and also writing in your chosen careers as engineers.

Learning outcomes
After successful completion of the course, you will be able to:

- Construct a variety of writing genres applicable to your engineering programme;
- Demonstrate how to cite and reference sources using an appropriate referencing system;
- Employ appropriate register and academic style for a particular writing genre;
- Demonstrate the grammatical language features of academic writing used in genres found on your engineering programme;
- Reflect on your learning and describe how you applied the skills learnt on this module to your assessed writing tasks on your engineering programme.

Skills outcomes
The aim of the module is to develop students written communication skills in the genres most commonly found within Level 2 engineering. This includes:
- laboratory reports;
- design specifications;
- short answer responses;
- reflective writing.

Core subject specific skills from previous years will also be built upon such as referencing, paraphrasing, and summarising.
