Module summary
This module will help you to progress from A1 to near A2 according to the CEFR scale in the four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) in Arabic. On the completion of this module you will be able to understand simple instructions in Arabic and respond appropriately in everyday situations. You will develop awareness of the Arabic culture and linguistic diversity. This module is designed for students studying Arabic as part of their degree.Objectives
Through a range of teaching activities in lectures and interactive language practice classes, this module aims to:* build on prior basic knowledge of Arabic
* develop a basic understanding of everyday vocabulary and expressions and a basic grasp of the relevant grammar for that level
* train students to apply these skills in basic written and spoken communication.
* develop students’ interest in the cultures where Arabic is spoken
* develop students’ awareness of Arabic linguistic diversity
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
LO1 – Students will be able to read and write the Arabic script at a pace appropriate to the level
LO2 - Students will be able to understand commonly used vocabulary and everyday expressions in the topics covered
LO3 – Students will have essential knowledge of grammar such as possessive sentence structure, the Arabic root and pattern system, verb conjugation, the different tenses, the definite article and prepositional phrases
LO4 - Students will be able to understand and make themselves understood by a sympathetic Arabic speaker in specific contexts in written and oral communication
LO5 – Students will have some awareness of linguistic and cultural differences in the use of Arabic
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this programme, you will be able to:
SO1 - Reflect on some of the linguistic differences and similarities between Arabic and other languages.
SO2 - Apply basic linguistic knowledge to infer meanings when encountering some linguistic variation in Arabic.
SO3 - Demonstrate basic critical reflection on some societal perceptions of Arabic linguistic variation.
SO4 - Identify and develop your language learning strategies.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students will receive regular formative feedback on smaller tasks that they complete as part of their weekly language classes practice activities to develop all four linguistic skills, e.g. reading short texts, watching short videos, writing short paragraphs or grammar exercises. Feedback on the weekly tasks will be given as written individual or collective feedback to monitor student progress and to further encourage autonomous learning. Students will also receive individual and collective feedback on their oral language production in language classes, for example on pronunciation, fluency and accuracy, in order to help the students to gain more confidence in their oral language skills.Methods of assessment
