Module summary
Persian is one of the major languages of the contemporary Middle East. It is spoken throughout Iran and over large areas of Afghanistan; and one of its branches, Tajik, is widely current in Central Asia. Persian studies is typically paired with sub-fields such as Arabic, Islamic Religion and Culture, International Politics of the Middle East, Indo-Islamic culture and civilization, Sufism, linguistics, theology, philosophy, Near Eastern history, Turkish and the history of art. This module assumes no prior knowledge of Persian. It offers students an opportunity to develop their skills in four areas of language acquisition: listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing.A good knowledge of Arabic is helpful for reading Persian. The module is designed as an discovery module for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.Objectives
The module is designed for those complete beginners who wish to attain a basic understanding of Persian language covering four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.It aims to equip students with the Persian alphabet, morphology and syntax, and basic sentence constructions in Persian, the basics of Persian grammar and acquire limited vocabulary to be able, with the aid of a dictionary, to read very basic modern texts and conduct basic everyday conversation.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to understand Persian alphabet and basic sentences constructions in Persian, the basics of Persian grammar and acquire limited vocabulary to be able, with the aid of a dictionary, to read very basic modern texts and conduct basic everyday conversation.
The students will be using some oral skills in Persian. Topics covered at this level include communication in everyday situations.
Skills outcomes

Syllabus
A wide range of subjects will be presented in class, including audio-visual resources and written materials. The students will be using some oral skills in Persian. Topics covered at this level include communication in everyday situations.
This module will introduce basic grammar fields and more syntactic constructions, as well as continuing to expand students' vocabulary in a variety of lexical fields.
