Objectives
On completion of this module students:- should be able to recognise and be cognisant of a range of contested ideas about the artist, art, and the history of art;
- will have been introduced to various ways in which the history and theory of art connect with the actual practice of art;
- should also have developed skills of close-reading texts (visual and verbal) and of theorising visual art and culture with a view to enhancing their own self-directed learning.
Skills outcomes
- Verbal and written fluency in constructing a logical and coherent argument
- Participation in group discussions
- Co-ordination and dissemination of a range of historical, contextual visual information
- Using bibliographies and databases.
Syllabus
This module develops students' understanding of the ways in which visual culture conveys and constructs social values, and how visual images are wrapped-up with verbal representations and prior conceptualisations. Students encounter and explore further ways in which 'seeing' is thought.
The module further develops important issues and skills, which include:
- Key themes and concepts: ideology and visual 'rhetoric'; vocabulary of visual description and analysis; theory-dependence of observation, and relation of word and image;
- Analysis of visual, textual and narrative sources;
- Written articulation and conceptual focus.
