Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be familiar with key concepts such as definitions of 'heritage,' 'process/practice,' 'nation/state' and 'history;' have developed an understanding of the breadth of methodological and theoretical approaches relating to heritage in the twenty first century; have enhanced their analytical, critical thinking and interpretive skills through a digital interpretive project; and be cognisant of the institutions involved in presenting and marketing 'heritage' to a wide audience.Learning outcomes
With critical engagement suitable for a postgraduate student, students should be able to engage reflexively with, and develop their own perspective on key issues in contemporary heritage studies such as the implications of how terms such as 'significance,' 'quality' or 'authenticity' are mobilised; the histories of the development of 'heritage' in the UK and through international agencies such as UNESCO; management and leadership within critical debates about the role of institutions and democracy; different concepts and uses of 'heritage' and 'art;' how meanings of objects, artworks and buildings change over time and in different cultural contexts; the difference between western and a variety of non-western understandings of 'heritage;' and how heritage relates to the art market and questions raised by the branding and selling of heritage.
Syllabus
'Heritage' is a field defined by questions of material, practices and politics. By linking cultural studies approaches to the study of heritage via Raymond Williams' 'keyword' method, this module aims to equip students with a dynamic understanding of the key issues bound up in the study and management of heritage. Supported by strong international and cross-cultural perspectives, the module is characterized by a critical engagement with the historical, intuitional and political conditions under which 'heritage' as a field of interest has emerged. It uses problem solving approaches to actively create spaces for students to find their own way through the field and to actively see management and leadership and their emerging professional lives within these broader questions and contexts.
