Objectives

To introduce students to a range of current research topics within the field of biological sciences, and develop their ability to collate, critically analyse, and describe scientific information.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
1. discuss in-depth a range of research topics at the forefront of biological sciences;
2. select and critique scientific information obtained from reputable sources and integrate the material to provide an up to date account of the topic under discussion;
3. demonstrate advanced communication skills through presentation of the material in written format.


Syllabus

The module will comprise a series of advanced topics reflecting current developments across biological sciences.

In each topic lecturers will present current thinking and research findings, referring students to the research literature. Students will be required to read the up-to-date research literature to advance their knowledge beyond the material presented in the lectures.

This module is mutually exclusive with other Advanced topics modules in this semester with the faculty of Biological Sciences.

Private study

Private study will be devoted to preparation for lectures and producing good notes thereafter, and preparing for the end-of-semester examination.

An average of 5 hours additional reading/revision is expected per lecture (although this may vary between students).

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Lectures delivered online and student engagement with lectures will be monitored in line with standard faculty practice.
