Objectives
The objectives of the tutorial component are to:- enhance the ability to use library and other resources
- gain an appreciation of the skills required to present written reports under "normal" and "examination" conditions
- solve analytical problems and gain numerical skills
- argue a case persuasively
- develop/practice skills required for the preparation and delivery of oral presentations with the use of basic visual aids.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will:
- be able to search, access and reference the scientific literature correctly;
- be able to write a properly structured scientific essay or report;
- be able to present their results orally;
- calculate concentrations and analyse scientific data.
Skills outcomes
This module is about developing academic skills which will support your learning throughout your degree course. During the course of the module you will learn to research information, analyse it and present it in various formats for example as an essay or an oral presentation using appropriate visual aids. You will also be given exercises in data analysis and/or experimental design. However these skills are also of value to future employers as most graduate jobs whether in biology or more broadly require the ability to research, analyse and present information in a variety of formats.
Syllabus
The module is designed for students to learn how to:
- read and comprehend scientific literature
- conduct literature searches
- write formal scientific communications
- give oral presentations
- discuss current issues relating to the public awareness of science, from a rational, scientific standpoint.

The module will be assessed entirely via coursework. Summative assessment will based on two essays, one oral presentation and one problem solving exercise. There will be a compulsory formative essay assessment, a practice oral presentation and a practice data analysis assignment. You will be informed by your tutor of the assessment arrangements for your tutorial group. All work that is assessed will count equally towards your module mark.
