Objectives

Over the course of this module students will become familiar with some of the key processes in developmental biology and understand how a number of model organisms have informed our understanding of animal developmental biology.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students will:
- have an understanding of some of the major aspects of developmental biology across the animal kingdom.
- be familiar with the biology of some of the model organisms used in biological research across the animal kingdom;

Skills outcomes
Students can expect to:
- build on their ability to think about aspects of science critically;
- practise and improve upon literature searching and reviewing;
- further develop skills in the interpretation of experimental data, record-keeping and scientific report writing.


Syllabus

All animals develop from a single cell, the fertilised oocyte, yet there is an enormous diversity of form and function in the animal kingdom. This module introduces you to the topic of animal developmental biology: the study of processes by which animals, with their complex form and function are formed from a single cell at each generation. Lectures and labs will focus on the major biological processes in animal development and introduce you to the experimental approaches used in the study of development. This course will include some descriptions of the life-cycles of key species that are important in the study of development. These species may either be of classical importance to this subject or crucial to current research to understand the mechanisms behind the developmental processes we can observe.
