Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- select appropriate statistical analyses for a range of common forms of data;
- conduct statistical analyses with the aid of computer packages;
- interpret statistical evidence;
- understand the framework of conservation in the UK.

Learning outcomes
- Students will develop their oral presentation skills, prepare and deliver a short oral presentation.
- Students will develop statistical skills in the context of current research and practice in biodiversity
and conservation.

Skills outcomes
Students will develop their oral presentation and data analysis skills.


Syllabus

The module will consist of lectures, tutorials and linked computer sessions for statistics.

Topics will include:
- uses of statistics
- descriptive statistics
- hypothesis testing
- ANOVA and derivatives
- regression and correlation
- categorical data analysis.

In addition there will be a residential field course weekend introducing biodiversity sampling, and a lecture and tutorial on oral presentations.

Private study

Preparation for lectures, practicals and tutorials.
Completion of assessed work.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Attendance at lectures, practicals and tutorials, and performance during practicals, will be minitored.

Assessment will be based on exercises associated with the statistics and GIS practical classes and tutorials. There will be no examination.
