Biodiversity and Conservation Skills I

Objectives

By the end of the course, students will understand the use and interpretation of modern statistical methods and their implementation in the statistical package R. Students will have developed their written presentation skills, and written a piece of science journalism. They will have researched and prepared a (mock) funding application. They will understand how ethics impacts on conservation and research. They will understand the principles and practice of emergency first aid, and risk assessment and safety planning for fieldwork.

Skills outcomes
Students will develop presentation, writing and statistical skills in the context of current research and practice in biodiversity and conservation.

Syllabus

The module will consist of lectures, workshops, tutorials and computer practicals in: the use and interpretation of modern statistical methods including general and generalised linear models, general linear mixed models and resampling methods, their implementation in the statistical package R and application to biological problems; public understanding of science; ethics; grant writing, including an introduction to sources of funding and preparing a grant proposal. In addition there will be lectures and practical sessions covering emergency first aid and fieldwork safety.

Attendance of the statistics practicals is compulsory. The statistics component of the module is assessed on a pass/fail basis. Students who fail the statistics component will fail the module and will not be awarded the credits.
