Module summary

This module introduces the cornerstone skills and capabilities that are essential for scientific research in the field of sports and exercise science, human physiology and physical activity, biomedical science, neuroscience and pharmacology. This module include hands-on practical application of these skills and will include those applied in a clinical setting, in a laboratory and out in the field, as well as skills that support such activities for example research design, hypothesis testing, scientific writing and data analysis.

Objectives

Learners will develop core scientific skills specific to the Biomedical Sciences or Sports and Exercise Sciences

Learners will develop hands on practical skills and apply these skills in laboratory & other settings. Digital resources and tools, pre-learning activities, protocols, and data analysis sessions will support this. There will also be active learning sessions in which learners will be required to reflect upon the skills they have acquired in these sessions and make plans to further develop these. Learners submit a laboratory report for formative feedback in semester 1, in preparation for a summative laboratory report in semester 1 and 2.

Practical classes will be where the students can develop and apply their skills. They will be able to interact in teams and with the teaching team in order to trial and refine their skills.

Learners will further consolidate and develop their skills for experimental design, data analysis and interpretation, clinical reasoning and scientific writing in the supporting post-practical assessments/interactive workshops.

Learning outcomes
Be able to formulate hypotheses to a research questions

Test hypotheses by developing and applying appropriate clinical, laboratory or field-based practical research approaches

Collect and analyse scientific data, using a variety of methods

Communicate scientific findings effectively

Demonstrate knowledge of how research techniques covered in this module link to concepts.

A variety of skills will be introduced, applied and assessed in this module. Skills will be those relevant to all disciplines as well as discipline specific skills including sports and exercise science, human physiology, biomedical science, neuroscience and pharmacology.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Learners will receive formative feedback on a laboratory report in semester 1. Learners will then be able to implement this feedback when they write a complete lab report on one specific practical-or series of practicals conducted during each semester
